Jack's cast is off!!!

The whole visit was pretty quick. Well , if you call going to the doctor's "visits". Let's call them appointments.

The first room we went into was the cast room. I was mentally preparing myself for this the whole morning, cause from what I remember , those cast saws are pretty loud and a bit scary. Jack realizes now that when you lie down on a hospital bed, it's not because you are about to celebrate a great moment. As soon as we lay him down, he started to cry and I held his face and whispered" It's ok, this is a good thing." Once the cast was off, we looked at his little leg and saw that there was a blister on his heel. This blister formed when he had his splint on before he was casted. The doctor said that with just Vaseline and lotion, the blister should heal within a week.

Thrusday - March 19
Jack is a bit apprehensive about walking. : (
I am trying to get him used to the fact that he has to start walking at some point, but he is not liking it whatsoever. He is so used to the crawling and the carrying that when I try to make him stand, he just sits down and complains. It makes me sad to see this cause I thought our boy was going to be so rejoiced that the heavy cast is off, that he would want to stand and run immediately. Such is not the case. He is standing on both legs so that is a good start.

This weekend will bring us a Mom and son weekend. Brian is off for a conference for two days so it will be just Jack and I for Friday and Saturday. Looking forward to seeing how that will be. I think that maybe we will go out for breakfast on Saturday morning.

Jack is introduced to U2

Not personally, so all you U2 fans, take it easy. I introduced Jack to U2 via the radio. Since it has been U2 mania here these past two weeks on the radio, it's easy to catch a U2 tune at any time. Jack likes "Get on your boots". He starts bopping up and down when he hears the beginning guitar riffs.
Friday, his lullabies were "All I want is you" and "With or without you." When he drifted to sleep, I knew that he was my boy. Only a son of mine would be comforted by the DVD Rattle and Hum. Forget Baby Einstein.

Six days and counting til the cast comes off.

New Cast

We are coming up on the last week with the cast. THANK GOD!
Jack has been touching his toes a lot lately. He has been pulling the gauze that is on his toes so I think that he is at that point where the cast is starting to itch. I hope he makes it through this week cause that cast itch is something else. I had a broken arm when I was in third grade and to stop that itch, I had to stick a spoon down my cast to relieve some of the itching. That was tough. Not saying that Jack will do the same.
He has not tried to walk as much as I thought he would. He has crawled a lot and when I try to encourage him to walk, he gets angry and protests. I hope that when the cast is off, then he will just get up and run. That would be fantastic.

So a funny thing happened on Saturday morning...

Jack was playing around with his sock that he had on the cast, when he tugged so hard that....off it came. Now, Sam the cast man has told us that it might happen. Kids are so squirmy that sometimes they wiggle out of their cast. Should that happen, then we would have to recast him. Which at 7:30 on Saturday morning, the three of us went on our way to the ER to have Jack re-casted. They didn't have the white casting, so we chose blue. Pink may have been weird for Jack.
There was a TV in our room that were showing different movies, with one of the channels showing the Muppet show. We chose to watch the Muppet Show. This time was not so bad. We thought we would be there for maybe half an hour max. But we stayed there for two hours. And everytime a doctor, nurse, practitioner whatever came in our room, they would ask the same questions. I thought that it was funny that there was an actual sign on the wall that said
"If you are wondering why you are waiting, please pick up the phone and dial the guest service extension."
Nice.
